The History
In 2007, Response’s Lay Response Council (LRC) recognized the need for a significant shift in their fundraising activities. From the late 70’s through 2003, an annual solicitation letter had been the only vehicle with which additional, critical dollars needed to operate the organization were gleaned. Beginning in 2004, the LRC began to supplement the annual letter with an annual fundraising event. Initially held at Comedy Sportz and other local venues, the event was incrementally successful in raising additional dollars for Response’s work with teens and families in our communities. Though the theme was “fun,” it didn’t entirely resonate with Response’s mission and its work – “serving teens and families by providing outreach, education, counseling and sexual health care in a teen friendly environment, empowering them to make healthy life choices.”
As Council members continued to brainstorm regarding an event that would truly represent “Response” and the population served, they identified the option of teens raising funds for teens; a true service oriented opportunity for local teens to help others, much like themselves. “Tuned In – A Teen Music Showcase” debuted in February 2008 and has taken on a life of its own! Each year, five to seven area high school music departments commit to providing an evening of incredible entertainment to a rapt audience of parents, educators, community members and local politicians. From choral groups to accappella, garbage can percussion performances to jazz ensembles, the event has amassed quite a following while showcasing the remarkable talent of high school age youth, giving back in ways that are quite spectacular.
In it’s first year, Tuned In raised over $47,000 and this past year Tuned In brought in an amazing $55,000. Tuned In 2012 will take place on March 17th at Glenbrook South’s Watson Auditorium and promises to generate even more excitement and raise even more money for the teens at Response!
